Last Wednesday, UPS delivered my latest acquisition, an ICOM IC-R8600 10 kHz-3 GHz receiver and I believe it is the best receiver I have ever owned. The single worse review I ever read, outside of reviews in magazines that actually dont test the radios, was the IC-7800 review in QST. The IC-7800 looks considerably worse than some of the other radios on the list simply because it has a 3-kHz roofing filter.
The real test is if you hear a very noticeable noise increase when you connect an antenna to the receiver. the TX-500 receiver is comparable in performance to the IC-7700 and IC-7800. 135dBm is 10dB more sensitive than -125dBm.This number doesnt matter very much in what you actually hear. I have been a radio hobbyist for over 55 years and over that time, I have owned a lot of radios. And finally, the most important thing to remember is that the 2-kHz Sherwood DR test always favors radios with narrow roofing filters.
